ABOUT US
The Mortgage Desk (Scotland) Ltd was incorporated on 1st April 1993 and traded from premises in Stirling as mortgage brokers. The reason Stirling was chosen was because it was nearly equidistant from Glasgow and Edinburgh with easy access to Central Scotland. With the A80, M9 and A74 being so close most major areas of population are within easy reach.
At the time the operation was established, adverse or sub prime lenders such as Kensington Mortgage Company were entering the mortgage market and using packagers, a new concept in the mortgage market. For a while The Mortgage Desk traded successfully as packagers in this new adverse market. A packager receives an application from a customer gathers all the necessary paperwork together before submitting it to the lender thus speeding up the process. As lenders expect to receive a fully packaged application so that they were only required to rubber stamp the application a good deal of expertise was required in the packaging. This expertise is still retained in the company today.
George Barrowman joined the company in 1995 as managing director. Previously he had been a successful Corporate Manger with The Royal Bank of Scotland plc. Soon after the company assumed the trading name of
Mortgage Connections which is the name it is widely known by today. In 1998 George bought out the other shareholders and continued to trade from Stirling until the end of 1999 when the operation was moved to Denny. Throughout that time the company was able to expand its operation direct to the public and has now built up a good client bank and reputation with the lenders.
When regulation came along the Company decided to go completely Independent for both Mortgages and General Insurance with no tie up with any lender, network or club.
Under George’s leadership the Company now operates in all sections of the mortgage market, full status prime cases, self certification, one hundred percent, one hundred percent plus, buy to let, let to buy, adverse, sub prime self certification, offshore mortgages, expat mortgages, remortgages. In addition through its lending panel Mortgage Connections can also offer loans to the rural sector for purchase of land and buildings and to individuals for the renovation of run down buildings, properties of unusual construction, especially wooden houses, eco friendly new builds and conversion of barns, windmills, lighthouses and shops.
The Company now has a panel of insurers for general insurance which includes mortgage protection, accident, sickness and unemployment cover and building and contents.
Being independent means that the customer always gets the best deal for them. It is usually cost driven but not always and depends on the customers needs as shown by the fact find. Also being independent the Company has the option of charging a fee or relying on the commission fee from the lender, in reality most customers opt for the commission route and no fees are charged by Mortgage Connections. The Company will make house calls if required or do it by telephone or internet.
Although mainly involved in the mortgage and protection market Mortgage Connections also has contacts for both secured and unsecured loans and commercial borrowing.
Mortgage Connections prides itself on ‘’Customer Service’ and is very flexible, being able to arrange the mortgage, the survey, the solicitors and insurance if required but on the other hand if the customer only wishes the mortgage there will be no pressure to take anything else.
